Create "Rainbow" Templates

So you want some cool looking templates?

Rainbow Template

The first thing you need is a UV mapped thing to make a template of, in this case we will use Kane's 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility's Windows. You can also use the body shell for this, basically anything that has a UV map. In ZMod select everything you want to use in the template and go into "Edit UV", if it already has a UV map select keep original and don't force it onto any materials. If it is not already UV mapped go ahead and map it and come back here when it is.

All mapped and ready for some colour?

Well we still have some things to do first so you will have to wait a bit longer. In the UV Mapper window open the render menu, and select "Wireframe UV Atlas" from the drop down, make sure you output is 4096x4096 (4K) and click render. Save this as "template_name wire.dds". Now for the colours, in the drop down select "World-space Normal Map" and click render. Save this as "template_name norm.dds".

Please note, If your normal maps has blue on the orange side and orange on the blue side or any other colours on their wrong sides, that means you have a mesh object that is facing the other way connected to your UV map. Deselect these and hide them before clicking render to make sure you get a clean normal map.

Photoshop and the final build

Ok, now open Photoshop and drag in your Normal Map Render. if there is any spot that needs to be clear/transparent now is the time to remove it from the template, if not import your Wireframe over the top of the normal map. Change the Blending mode to "Multiply". And there you are, add any other final touches like your name and logo, maybe a bit of text to say what the vehicle is and you have yourself a new rainbow template!
